Literacy and Fiction
The Medieval Maidens book series was developed to introduce young readers to Gisela, Adele, Isabelle, Gevrehan, and Mary. By using historical
fiction to introduce medieval princesses, readers learn about this historical era through the eyes of someone like them. Dr. Jarman is a proponent of using cross-curricular novels to engage learners. Her books have been awarded educational/historical Book of the Year and as well as the Preferred Choice Award by Creative Child Magazine. She began Medieval Maidens in 2006 as a way to teach children about life in a castle during the Middle Ages. Lois has also developed a reading curriculum for the books,
which have been used in after school reading programs and by Girl Scout groups.
Language Acquisition
With the numbers of non-native English speakers entering United States institutions of higher education remaining steady, Dr. Jarman’s English Language Curriculum offers a new approach to language instruction: one that allows students to speak and write English in a whole language setting that does not focus on grammar instruction. This pedagogy has been successfully implemented at the university level.
