About Lois
Dr. Lois Jarman has been a world language educator for more than twenty-five years. Lois
received her doctoral degree in second language acquisition and served as a university administrator for five years prior to returning to the classroom in 2021. In addition, she taught French, Spanish and Latin for seventeen years in public schools. She has served as a student teacher supervisor and mentor in addition to teaching a variety of Education courses. She is currently a faculty member in the Graduate School of Organizational Leadership at Shenandoah University.
Lois has traveled extensively and led many student trips to Europe and South America. She lived in Rosario, Argentina, for a language immersion program and has spent extended time in Japan
and France. Lois continues to teach languages and education courses as an adjunct professor. For six years, Lois penned the monthly column, Empty Nest, for the Frederick News Post, and also wrote the children’s book series Medieval Maidens for young readers. Those books have been used in afterschool reading programs and were awarded Books of the Year by Creative Child Magazine.

Lois has presented at various state and regional conferences on Leadership, Language Acquisition, Women in Leadership, and literacy. She has been a hospital volunteer for more than twenty years and also served on her local hospital’s development council.
Lois served on the Board of Directors for the Fredericktowne Players, a non-profit theater organization, and has appeared in more than 30 productions in the Maryland-Virginia-West Virginia region.
She has served as a mentor with Woman to Woman Mentoring, a member and past president of the Frederick County Commission for Women, and a member of the Frederick Women’s Giving Circle. In addition, Lois served as the president of Central Maryland PFLAG from 2006-2016 and was named The Frederick Center’s Ally of the Year in 2013, in addition to being named a Community Icon by Freestate Maryland. She was appointed to Frederick County’s Board of Education by County Executive Jan Gardner in January 2019 and served until November of 2020.
Lois is a charter member of the Smoketown Rotary Club in Brunswick and has served as the club’s president. She is the founder of Another Day, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving women as they re-enter society following incarceration and/or addiction. Lois also serves on the Frederick City Re-entry Coalition. Lois has been a resident of Frederick County in Maryland for more than thirty-five years. Her most prized title is that of grandmother, but she also cherishes being the mother of two amazing adult children.
